Producing a Live Show with One Camera
I t was an uncharted path and we had no experience in it whatsoever. But we were prepared to take the deep dive which, to many, must have seemed like a mere quixotic delight. Some industry experts warned us about the possible challenges ahead. With our minds fully made up, we ignored their warnings and went ahead with our plans. Welcome to Star Quest 2006.
Launched in 2002 as a music talent show, Star Quest in its first year produced the group, KC Presh, which beat Asa and D Comedians (Raw/Klint) to emerge winners. KC Presh went on to become one of the well-known musical groups in Nigeria. Star Quest was conceived, essentially, as an individual talent show with some professional judges determining the winners from the preliminary stages up to the finals. The finals at The Coliseum, in Ikeja, did not go without much drama. In contention for the final prize, which included a recording contract, were KC Presh and D Comedians.
Drama 1: It was never in doubt; judges are human. However, when presiding, they are expected to curtail their personal emotion and feelings. While the contestants were in the second round of performances, one of the three judges, the late Christy Essien-Igbokwe, betrayed her emotions and jumped on the stage to show love to the female contestant. The shock in the hall was clearly etched on everyone’s face. As soon as she came back to her seat, Mr. Festus Odimegwu, then managing director of Nigerian Breweries climbed onto the stage and stated how so unprofessional Christy had behaved. Without consulting any of the other judges or indeed any other person, he declared unilaterally that the votes awarded by Christy had all been nullified. It was a thorough dress-down before a live audience. One might say she brought it on herself, but it was really mortifying seeing her spoken to in such belittling way, like a little girl.
Drama 2: The judges’ award of the title to KC Presh seemed to have gone down well with the audience. However, a few seconds after the MC announced them as winners, Mr. Festus Odimegwu again climbed onto the stage, grabbed the microphone and announced to a rather bemused audience that he didn’t think KC Presh deserved the crown. He explained that being a beer man, he could discern good beer music if he saw one. In his view, the winners were the D Comedians (Raw/ Klint), and to ensure they actually felt like champions he said they will receive exactly the same prizes as the officially declared winners. They could come to the office the next day to redeem their prizes which would be paid from his personal purse, he declared.
The next day, even before most managers had got to the office, D Comedians were already waiting to collect their prizes from the managing director as promised. They were directed from the MD’s office to the brand manager to arrange for the prizes for them. The joke later was whether the brand manager had become Mr.
